Lewis Johs Establishes The Michael T. Colavecchio Memorial Scholarship

Posted: March 26, 2021

Lewis Johs is honored to establish a scholarship at Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in memory of their partner, Michael T. Colavecchio, a ’90 alumnus. Mike lost his life in 2020 after a difficult battle with cancer. While at Hofstra Law, he served as a law fellow and as editor-in-chief of the Hofstra Property Law Journal.

The Michael T. Colavecchio ’90 Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded in perpetuity to one or more students entering Hofstra Law who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and/or financial need.

Mike was an accomplished trial lawyer who represented clients for thirty years in all areas of casualty defense, including medical and other professional malpractice, New York Labor Law, vehicular negligence, premises liability, products liability, municipal liability, defamation, and copyright infringement. He also represented corporate clients in a variety of commercial matters, including employment practices and breach of contract cases.

“Michael epitomized what it means to be a lawyer,” said co-managing partners, Thomas Dargan ’96, and Jason Katz, “as well as the ideals we want to instill in all those who work at Lewis Johs. Everyone Mike encountered, whether co-workers at the firm, co-counsel, adversaries, or members of the judiciary, universally praised his professionalism, and his generous and good-natured spirit. He always had time to answer a question or to help his fellow lawyers, and we’re sure he would be thrilled that the firm is allowing him to help others through this scholarship.”

Mike was a frequent lecturer for continuing legal education programs, for numerous bar associations, and to New York State judges on tort law at New York State Court System lectures. He was also an active member of his community, coaching youth sports and contributing his time to local charities.

Lewis Johs was founded in 1993 by four attorneys focused on solving client problems with an emphasis on quality and excellence. “Mike embodied that vision,” says founding partner Fred Johs. “Lewis Johs is proud to endow this scholarship in Mike’s name for future members of our Long Island legal community.”
